Need an ESL Guessing Game?

Who am I? is an entertaining activity and a very good filler if you are looking for fun ESL games.

Students are given pieces of paper with information about a famous person on it and the rest of the class have to guess who they are.

This is suitable for adults and teenagers.

Levels: intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced.

He is a famous British chef, restaurateur, cookery book author and media personality. In a documentary in 2002 he tried to train 15 disadvantaged youths to become chefs in his restaurants. And in 2003 his 'Feed Me Better' campaign aimed to remove junk food from school canteens across Britain. In 2010 he filmed a documentary about the pig industry in EU and UK.

Who am I? - Jamie Oliver


He was an inventor, industrialist and engineer from Sweden. He is best known for inventing dynamite and became known as the Merchant of Death. He was traumatised by the nickname and established a prize to be awarded for distinction in 5 different areas – peace, physiology or medicine, chemistry, literature and physics.

Who am I? - Alfred Nobel


A self-taught artist from Mexico, she began painting seriously after a bus accident left her severely injured. All throughout her life she suffered from many illnesses and had numerous surgeries after the accident. She died at the age of 47 from lung failure. Her artwork falls into the category of Surrealism and her story has been made into a film.

He is the world's most famous magician and has 11 Guinness World Records to his name to date. He used magic to gain confidence as a child and at the age of 12 he was invited to join the Society of American Magicians. He has so far received 21 Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His most famous trick was making the Statue of Liberty disappear.

This woman was the pioneer of modern nursing and was also an active social reformer. At the outbreak of war in the Crimea 1853, she assembled a team of 30 nurses and helped improved hygiene and sanitary conditions in the hospitals, resulting in the reduction of the death count by two thirds. She was nicknamed Lady with the Lamp by her patients.

Who am I? - Florence Nightingale


Before becoming the wife of an Argentinian president, she was a successful radio actress and model. Using her position as first lady, she built hospitals and houses, fought for women's right to vote, provided scholarships to the poor and performed other charitable acts. She died from uterine cancer in 1952 and has been the subject of many books and movies.

This 13th century European explorer was one of the first to enter China. The emperor was so impressed with him that he made him ambassador, representative and governor of one of the Chinese provinces. He wrote a famous book which inspired many others to travel, including Christopher Columbus. He returned to Italy after many years with fine jewels, riches and treasures.

This man is a wealthy entrepreneur and T.V. Personality. He is best-known for being a judge on talent shows such as Pop Idol, The X Factor and American Idol. He has been named as one of the 100 most influential people by 'Time' magazine twice. When judging contestants he is brutally honest, very sarcastic and rude.

This man is one of the richest people in the world and probably the most influential philanthropist. He started investing his money as a teenager and became a millionaire by the time he was in his thirties. In 2006 he was declared by Forbes magazine to be the richest person in the world ($ 62 billion). He pledged to give away 85% of his wealth to charitable foundations.

This author has an amazing rags to riches story. She went from living on state benefits to becoming a multi-millionaire with the publication of her 7 books and 8 movies. The series about a boy wizard is now worth billions of dollars and is one of the highest grossing movies of all time.

Who am I? - J.K. Rowling


This woman is a Burmese opposition politician and probably one of the world's most prominent political prisoners. She was arrested by the military junta in 1990 after her party won the majority of votes and spent 15 years under house-arrest. She has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of her efforts to bring democracy to Myanmar (Burma).

The 'Founder of the Digital World' revolutionised the personal computer. This man founded Apple, Pixar Animation Studios and NeXT. Even though he was a college dropout, he won several awards and was named FT Person of the Year, No. 17 in Forbes Most Powerful People and Fortune's CEO of the Decade. He died in 2013 from pancreatic cancer.

This rock star wears a lot of make-up, bright red lipstick and a contact lens in one eye that makes him look creepy. His music is controversial and anti-religion and the band is so popular that they have won 3 platinum and 3 gold awards. His most famous album is called Antichrist Superstar. This musician is also involved in the arts, film and video games.

Who am I? - Marilyn Manson


This French fashion designer helped women liberate themselves from the corset and other confining garments. She designed bags, clothes, perfume, jewellery and legendary concept of 'the little black dress'. She died in 1971, but her company continues to generate hundreds of millions of dollars today.

Who am I? - Coco Chanel


This football player plays for the English national team and for Manchester United. He has been nominated twice as England Player of the Year and has participated in 2 World Cups. He is a phenomenally successful player and is endorsed by Nike and EA Sports.
